What is depression?
Depression is a mental disorder in which you experience extreme sadness for prolonged periods of time.
Depression symptoms :
The first thing that we are going to look at is the physical symptoms of depression. There are a variety of different physical symptoms associated with depression. Most of these symptoms will be fairly common, but if someone is suffering from severe depression they might also experience symptoms such as sleep problems, weight gain, fatigue, and headaches. If someone is suffering from more than one of these symptoms of depression, then it is important to get a proper diagnosis from a physician.
Another common symptom of Depression is a lack of interest in things that used to bring a person happiness, such as hobbies or certain forms of entertainment. This can lead to a lack of social interaction, which further contributes to depressive feelings.
Another symptom of depression is that a person may feel listless, or that their thoughts are racing very fast. There may also be an excessive dryness of the mouth and lips, and the person may seem to constantly have dryness on their lips.
Another symptom of depression is the inability to focus on any single task for prolonged periods of time. A depressed person may be able to sit down and read a book for a few minutes, but if they have to multi-task, they will be unable to concentrate. This symptom can also be related to memory problems.
Insomnia, or difficulty getting to sleep, is one of the most common symptoms of depression. Other symptoms include loss of appetite or overeating, a feeling of hopelessness or worthlessness, or losing interest in things that were once important to the depressed person.
Causes of depression :
What is known is that any psychological disorder or illness leads to physical illness and, in the case of depression, there is a high instance of a disorder or illness being a contributing factor for the symptoms. Some of the disorders that are suspected as causes of depression include; bipolar disorder, substance abuse, alcoholism, smoking, social phobia, and childhood trauma.
Another important cause of depression is family history. Those whose family members have been diagnosed with any of the illnesses listed above are at increased risk of developing depression. The family history can directly influence the symptoms and severity of the depression, as there is a higher likelihood of experiencing the depression if one of the family members has been diagnosed with any of these illnesses. However, not everyone who carries a family history of a psychiatric illness will develop depression.
Other illnesses such as thyroid dysfunction and hypoglycemia can lead to chronic depression. Those with a medical condition that affects brain chemistry and the activity of chemicals within the brain are at an increased risk of developing chronic depression. These medications include anti-seizure medications, antidepressants, and antipsychotic medications. While those with chronic depression are at an increased risk for suicide after any type of medical care, suicide is a particularly serious and immediate concern when it comes to those who are suffering from depression, as they are not able to discuss their problems with friends or family members.
As with major depressive disorders, women are more likely than men to experience sadness. Women are five times more likely than men to experience major depression in their lifetime. Postpartum depression is another common condition that leads to sadness. Many times after pregnancy, women are faced with a range of emotions, including sadness.
When looking for a cause of depression, it’s important to consider the effect of stress on the brain. Both physical and mental stress can cause fluctuations in brain chemistry. For those who suffer from chronic depression, this often occurs repeatedly. The good news is that those suffering from depression do have treatments available to correct the chemical imbalances in the brain.
How to deal with depression?
This requires finding out what causes your depression in the first place. The causes of depression could be any number of things, and some things are more common than others. It is often a combination of personal and environmental factors that lead to depression. If you feel worse after certain things happen, then this could be an example of how to deal with depression by focusing on these events and learning how to feel better around them.
Those with more severe cases of depression should seek help from a qualified professional. A psychiatrist or psychologist can evaluate the level of your depressive disorder and determine the best treatment plan. If the disorder is related to a chemical imbalance in the brain, medications may be prescribed. In some cases, a combination of medication and therapy will be required.
